Corning has unveiled Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, its latest innovation in smartphone cover glass technology. The company says the new material is its toughest Gorilla Glass Ceramic yet, offering significantly improved durability and drop resistance for modern smartphones. It will debut on an upcoming foldable from Motorola, with Samsung expected to adopt the technology in future Galaxy flagships.

Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 brings stronger drop protection

According to Corning, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 was designed to improve long-term durability rather than just initial strength. The company says it used its extensive expertise in glass and ceramic engineering to create a material that can better withstand the wear and tear devices experience over time. In lab testing, the new glass achieved impressive drop resistance, surviving falls from more than two meters onto concrete-like surfaces.

The material also performed well in repeated drop scenarios. During testing, it survived at least 20 consecutive drops from one meter onto asphalt-like surfaces. By comparison, Corning says a competing aluminosilicate glass often failed on the very first drop under the same conditions. These improvements enhance smartphone durability without adding excessive thickness or weight.

“With our unparalleled expertise in glass and ceramic science, we built Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 to provide consistent, reliable durability that holds up over time,” said Lori Hamilton, Division Vice President & Business Technology Director at Corning Gorilla Glass.

Corning confirmed that Motorola’s upcoming Razr foldable will be the first device to use Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. We should also see the new glass on many other phones in the coming months and years. Samsung has long relied on Corning’s protective glass for its flagship phones, including Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the Galaxy S25 Edge last year. We could see the latest version on some Galaxy devices in the future.
