Just as Samsung users are finally seeing the Android 16 QPR2-based One UI 8.5 stable update roll out, Google is getting ready to announce the next big update. Like every year, Google will unveil the latest Android version, which this year is Android 17, and it’ll power One UI 9.

Android 17 will be Google’s biggest update ever, and One UI 9 will benefit

Google’s President of the Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, said in an X post that Android 17 will be the biggest update Android has ever seen. This has gotten all of us very excited to see what Google has up its sleeves. Thankfully, it won’t take long before we know.

The Android Show: I/O Edition is scheduled to take place next week. It will take place on May 12 at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET. The company will announce all the good (and bad) stuff that’s coming to Android 17, and ultimately, One UI 9 as well.

Funnily, Android boss confirmed that Google isn’t copying Apple

One assumption that Android 17 will copy liquid glass from iOS 26 isn’t going to happen. In two separate replies, Sameer Samat confirmed that. “Don’t worry. Not happening!” he said in a reply to someone who requested the company not copy Apple and its liquid glass design philosophy.

This year’s The Android Show: I/O Edition is going to be particularly interesting. We may get to hear interesting things about Wear OS 7, Android XR, Android Auto, more AI features everywhere, and whatnot.

You can expect those features to come with One UI 9. It will debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold Wide, and Flip 8 foldables this summer. The beta program should ideally start around the same timeline. The Galaxy S26 trio will be the first to enjoy that perk.
