Samsung launched its Android 15-based One UI 7.0 beta program for the Galaxy S24 series earlier this month. Alongside a myriad of other changes, this update improves the face scanning process. It should allow for more accurate and secure face unlocking.
One UI 7.0 beta improves the face-scanning process for enhanced security
Last week, Samsung rolled out the second beta build of the One UI 7.0 update. We have been exploring the changes and recently stumbled upon an interesting security enhancement. When registering a new face for face unlocking, you now need to first scan the front of your face and then tilt your head up and down. Previously, registering your face was simpler, requiring you to only look directly at the camera for a few seconds.
While Samsung didn’t mention this change in its official changelog, it might make face unlocking more secure. Instead of a simple front image of your face, One UI 7.0 scans the face from multiple angles. This should help create a more detailed facial structure for accurate processing. We are only assuming though, as there’s no official confirmation if this change enables more secure facial recognition.
We haven’t noticed any other changes to the feature. You can still access face unlocking from Settings > Security and privacy > Screen lock and biometrics > Face recognition. Samsung lets you register multiple faces and manage settings like whether to remain on the lock screen until you swipe. You can also enable recognition only when your eyes are open, and temporarily increase screen brightness for better recognition in low light.
Samsung is expected to soon release One UI 7.0 Beta 3. It should bring more functional enhancements and stability improvements. The final update will roll out following the Galaxy S25 launch on January 22, 2025. It could take a while before the big update reaches all eligible Galaxy devices.
