Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition Unboxing and Tour!

by | Nov 12, 2024 | Galaxy Z, Hardware Reviews

We did something a little crazy and plopped down $3000 to import a Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition from South Korea. While this phone won’t arrive in the US, or any other region outside of China and Korea, it offers an important glimpse at Samsung’s direction for foldables. Indeed, the Z Fold Special Edition is likely an early preview of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 design and form factor.

If you’re interested in what Samsung’s limited edition fold looks like, we’ve uploaded an unboxing and first look on our Youtube channel. Overall, we’re quite impressed with Samsung’s vision for the future of foldable smartphones.

In addition to offering a refined, premium device, the unboxing experience is elevated as well. Samsung includes a charger and premium leather case in the box. These accessories disappeared from Galaxy packaging several years ago, for “regular” releases anyway. Since this is a special release, Samsung obviously felt the need for special packaging.

Z Fold Special Edition – What’s New?

The cover display on the Z Fold Special Edition is much wider, making it far easier to compose longer texts and emails. In our opinion, the 21:9 aspect ratio is the sweet spot for the front panel. The inner display is also larger than the Z Fold 6 (8″ vs 7.6″). Providing a more immersive media and gaming experience. If you’re a camera aficionado, the Z Fold SE features the same 200 MP primary sensor found on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Samsung left no stone unturned, fixing most of the Z Fold 6 issues highlighted in our review.

If thin is in, the Z Fold Special Edition is a definite winner. When folded, it checks in at just 10.6mm thick, a 1.5mm reduction from the Z Fold 6 released just 3 months earlier. While the weight is around the same, the Z Fold Special Edition feels less dense in the hand.

One interesting observation – the power button is less recessed compared to the Z Fold 6. Providing an easier target when using the fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, most of the internal specs are identical to its smaller sibling. The only important downgrade from the Z Fold 6 is S Pen support. Samsung could not accommodate the digitizer on the inner display. This means that the Z Fold Special Edition does not work with the S Pen.

We have full coverage on the Z Fold Special Edition on the way! Make sure to subscribe to our channel on Youtube and bookmark the site for a full review, camera comparison to the S24 Ultra, and more! The S25 Ultra may also feature a camera array similar to the Z Fold SE. If you plan to preorder the S25 Ultra, check out our free mystery box program.
