Samsung and Apple are in constant competition. From hardware to software, it’s a nonstop battle between these tech behemoths. Apple has long been rumored to offer a slimmer version of the iPhone. Many Apple analysts believe this could release in 2025 as the iPhone 17 Air. Not to be outdone, Samsung reportedly has plans to release a slimmer version of the Galaxy S25. It is unclear whether the screen size would match the S25, S25+, or offer a completely different design altogether. One thing we do know, it will be substantially thinner and lighter. Unfortunately, it seems likely the slimmer Galaxy S25 will have a smaller battery as well, a necessary sacrifice for thinness.
According to TheGalox_ on X, the slimmer Galaxy S25 could be called the Galaxy S25 Special Edition or Galaxy S25 SE. This makes a lot of sense considering the recent release of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. The primary appeal of the Z Fold SE is the thinner and lighter design compared to the Z Fold 6. If Samsung indeed opts for a Galaxy S25 SE model, the S25 lineup would have 5 distinct tiers – S25, S25+, S25 SE, S25 Ultra, and the S25 FE. This could be a confusing jumble of SKUs for average consumers, but Samsung could delete the base Galaxy S model if they determine thin is in.
Galaxy S25 SE – Pros and Cons
It remains to be seen how consumers would take to an ultra-thin flagship phone. While the design and profile may be interesting, there are definite drawbacks. In addition to a smaller battery, thermals are a primary concern with such a thin device. Durability is an issue that comes to mind as well. We will certainly put the Z Fold Special Edition through its paces when we receive our unit.
If Samsung can slim things down without too many compromises, this could be an interesting addition to the Galaxy S lineup. If you’re interested in our Z Fold Special Edition review and staying up to date on all things Samsung, subscribe to our weekly newsletter and bookmark the site!
