Samsung Reveals Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition Launch Date

by | Oct 17, 2024 | Galaxy Z, News

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition may be just days from its official launch. A teaser from the company suggests the new “slim” foldable will debut on Monday, October 21. It was previously said to break cover on October 25, which now appears incorrect.

Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition arrives sooner than expected

A few hours ago, Samsung published a public invitation to the unveiling of a “new Galaxy with another innovation” on October 21. The Newsroom post is accompanied by an 11-second video, revealing that the company is launching a new foldable this Monday. It appears to be none other than the long-rumored Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.

The upcoming device comes in a slimmer and lighter profile than the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 6. Samsung made this “special edition” foldable to compete against Chinese brands that have long cracked the code to super slim folding phones. It is said to be 4.9mm around the waist when unfolded and 10.6mm thick when folded.

In comparison, the Fold 6 measures 5.6mm and 12.1mm respectively. While earlier reports hinted at an upgraded under-display selfie camera (UDC) for the Special Edition model, the teaser video from Samsung suggests it will feature a punch-hole camera on the inside. The company allegedly dropped UDC in favor of a less prominent display crease.

Industry insiders say the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition will feature a UFG (ultra-thin glass) panel, an advanced version of the UTG (ultra-thin glass) panel found on the Fold 6 and other models. The upgraded panel helps reduce the crease and offers stronger protection against scratches.

All things considered, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is shaping up to be the most advanced Samsung foldable yet. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t plan to launch it globally. The device is rumored to only arrive in China and South Korea. Or maybe the Korean behemoth will surprise us with a wider availability, we shall find out soon. While it might be wishful thinking, a little optimism never hurts!
