Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge (review) ahead of Apple’s iPhone Air in an apparent attempt to get a head start in the ultra-thin phone category. However, the strategy didn’t pay off. The device failed to meet sales expectations, prompting Samsung to scrap plans for a successor. Apple, meanwhile, reportedly still sees potential in the form factor and is already preparing an iPhone Air 2.
Galaxy S25 Edge may have been a one-and-done experiment, or is it?
According to reports, Samsung has canceled the Galaxy S26 Edge and has no plans to launch an S27 Edge either. If that turns out to be true, the Galaxy S25 Edge could end up being its first and last modern Edge-branded flagship.
Apple’s iPhone Air didn’t fare much better. On paper, many viewed it as a worse value proposition than the Galaxy S25 Edge. Reports suggest Apple has also dropped plans for a new slim iPhone this year. However, Bloomberg reports that the company is still working on a second-generation model, with plans to launch it in the spring of 2027.
More importantly, Apple appears ready to address some of the compromises that came with the first iPhone Air. One of the biggest rumored upgrades is the addition of a second rear camera. The original iPhone Air featured just a single rear camera, so this change would significantly improve its versatility. The device is also expected to offer better battery life, addressing another common criticism of ultra-thin smartphones.
The fact that Apple is already developing an iPhone Air 2 suggests the company still believes in the long-term potential of the Air lineup. Whether Samsung feels the same way about the Edge remains to be seen. For now, the company appears to be moving on, but if Apple eventually finds success with the Air series, Samsung could always decide to revisit the idea in the future.
