Are you unable to make phone calls through voice commands in your car? Well, you are not alone. Android Auto users are complaining that Gemini fails to make calls, ruining the on-the-go experience. Google has not acknowledged the problem yet, leaving affected users to figure out the cause and solution.

A weird bug is triggering a calling issue in Gemini on Android Auto

A few months ago, Google brought its AI chat assistant, Gemini, to Android Auto, a smart driving companion app. This replaced the Google Assistant on the car dashboard, retaining hands-free capabilities. However, it looks like some users have lost the voice command calling functionality.

When they ask Gemini to call a contact, the system fails to complete the action. They now see an error message that reads: “Something went wrong. Please try again.” This makes the experience frustrating, as users can’t make hands-free calls while driving. Note that the issue does not trigger for everyone. This suggests the problem may be tied to server-side settings that the company needs to tweak.

The affected users tried common troubleshooting steps, such as reinstalling the Google and Gemini apps, but the issue did not fix. Moreover, they reset their phone and restarted the car’s infotainment system, but had no luck. However, when switching back to the older Google Assistant, they were able to make a call normally.

Of course, this is not the right solution, but until Google patches the issue, it remains the only workaround. To do so, users can head over to the default digital assistant settings on their phone. From there, they can select Google Assistant instead of Gemini.

As of now, there is no word from Google about the cause of the problem or when a fix might arrive. Hopefully, it doesn’t take long to bring back normal calling functionality for Android Auto Gemini users.
