Samsung’s Smart Glasses Will Play Nice With Your Galaxy Watch

Samsung’s new smart glasses, closely developed with Google, were finally unveiled at Google I/O today. They showed off two different designs for their display-less glasses, as well as some clever software tricks that utilize your other Android devices.

Google showed off an impressive demo, using the capabilities of the Android ecosystem and the power of Gemini. The presenter took a photo with her glasses, capturing the crowd at the keynote. In the same prompt, she asked it to stylize the image and add extra elements. The glasses captured the photo and uploaded it to Gemini, where the effects were applied. It then sent a notification that could be previewed on the presenter’s WearOS-powered watch.

This wasn’t the only example of the ecosystem working together. Google also showed the presenter ordering coffee for pickup on DoorDash without taking their phone out of their pocket. Gemini navigated through the app, set up the requested order, and, after confirmation, placed it. The glasses then provided verbal directions to the coffee shop using Google Maps.

It’s not Android exclusive

It’s not only Android devices that benefit from this new hardware. It was announced that these new glasses will be compatible with both Android and iOS devices. This marks a divergence from other Android accessories, like WearOS powered watches, that can only be paired with Android phones. It remains to be seen if both platforms will receive feature parity, or there will be exclusive features on offer. 

This is the next major step in the evolution of Android XR. What started with XR headsets is quickly materializing into display-less glasses, with a launch set for this fall. We can’t wait to get our hands on them… or rather, eyes on them.
