Galaxy XR helped lay the groundwork for the Android XR operating system, and today Google revealed much more. During the latest episode of The Android Show, which focused entirely on Android XR, the company shared its plans for upcoming smart devices powered by the platform and how they could fit into everyday use.

As a quick heads-up, Galaxy XR also received its first update today, bringing a couple of new features to the headset. These include the newly introduced PC Connect, Travel Mode, and AI-based avatars called Likeness. But Google’s bigger goal is now clear. The company wants Android XR to move beyond headsets and into lightweight eyewear. Google plans to release three different types of Android XR glasses over the next few years.

Google details Android XR plans with smart glasses coming in 2026

The first will be audio-based smart glasses expected in 2026. These will not include a display and will rely on built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras to work with Gemini. Users will be able to talk to the AI, take photos, and get assistance based on what the camera sees, all through voice commands.

Next are monocular smart glasses, also planned for 2026. These will feature a small display over one lens to show basic visual information. Google highlighted features like music controls, navigation directions, Uber updates, and deeper Gemini support running on the tiny screen.

Further down the line, likely in 2027, Google plans to launch binocular XR glasses with displays in front of both eyes. These will support depth and mixed-reality visuals, offering a headset-like experience in a much smaller and lighter form factor.

Google Android XR roadmap plans

Google is working with fashion brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker on the design of these glasses, while Samsung remains its main hardware partner for XR. On the software side, Android XR will support everything from smart glasses to full headsets under a single SDK for developers.
