Galaxy Z Fold 6 Is Still Worth It Despite Disappointing Leaks

Jun 14, 2024 | Opinion

As the launch of Samsung’s highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 6 approaches, a series of leaks from Smartprix have provided a closer look at the new foldable. The latest images reveal a design that is shorter, with a wider cover screen and a significantly lighter build compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, a leaked specs sheet has disclosed that the Z Fold 6 will retain the same camera setup as last year’s model, a detail that may disappoint some potential buyers. Despite this, the $1899 starting price remains justifiable due to the superior software and fluidity offered by One UI.

Design Improvements: Shorter, Wider, and Lighter

The leaked images and specs of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 highlight several key design enhancements:

Shorter and Wider Cover Screen: The Z Fold 6’s cover screen is wider, making it more usable and practical for everyday tasks when the device is folded. The increase in width addresses one of the common complaints about previous models, where the narrow cover screen felt cramped for typing and other interactions.

Lighter Build: One of the most significant improvements is the reduction in weight. The Z Fold 6 is noticeably lighter than the Z Fold 5 (13g lighter to be exact), enhancing portability and making it more comfortable to hold and use for extended periods.

It’s a shame it took Samsung so long to give us the wider cover screen on the Z Fold series, but I do believe this alone makes the Z Fold 6 a worth upgrade.

    Camera Setup: Stagnation Amidst Innovation

Despite the exciting design changes, the leaked specs sheet reveals that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will maintain an identical camera setup to the Z Fold 5. This includes the same sensors and configurations, which, while competent, do not push the boundaries of what’s currently possible in smartphone photography. Battery life also looks to be unchanged, with the familiar 4400mAh battery retained from last year.

Samsung’s decision to retain the same camera hardware may place the Z Fold 6 behind some Chinese rivals, which have been aggressively innovating in this area. Brands like Huawei and Xiaomi have introduced advanced camera technologies in their latest foldables, setting a high bar for competition.

While this may be disappointing to users who prioritize camera advancements, it’s important to consider the overall package that Samsung offers. The Z Fold 6 might not lead in camera hardware, but it excels in other critical areas.

Justifying the higher $1899 Price Tag: The Power of One UI

The higher starting price of $1899 for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 may seem steep, especially given the static camera specs and unchanged battery capacity. However, Samsung’s One UI provides a compelling justification for this premium price:

Seamless Software Experience: One UI is renowned for its smooth, intuitive interface and robust feature set. It enhances the foldable experience with tailored functionalities, such as optimized multitasking, a sophisticated taskbar, and seamless transitions between the cover screen and the main display.

Regular Updates and Support: Samsung consistently delivers timely software updates and security patches, ensuring that users benefit from the latest features and protections. This level of support adds significant value to the device.

Ecosystem Integration: Samsung’s ecosystem, including devices like the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Buds, and SmartThings, integrates seamlessly with One UI, offering a cohesive and convenient user experience.

While the Galaxy Z Fold 6 may not boast groundbreaking camera innovations, its refined design, lighter build, and exceptional software experience make it a worthy contender in the premium foldable market. The improvements in usability, multitasking, and the fluidity of One UI justify the higher price point in my humble opinion. Most users, myself include, will simply jump on this upgrade to finally get that sweet wider cover display in our lives.
