Last year, YouTube announced it would expand support for auto-dubbed videos in more languages. Fast forward to today, and YouTube is making good on that promise. The platform is now rolling out the auto-dubbed video feature in several languages.
YouTube is now offering auto-dubbed videos in several languages
I’d say it’s a fantastic addition, giving creators the chance to reach a wider audience. The feature can quickly get the ball rolling by detecting the language of uploaded videos and automatically creating dubbed versions in English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
It covers all bases by automatically dubbing English videos into all the supported languages. However, videos in other languages are only dubbed into English. The feature is now rolling out to “hundreds of thousands” of YouTube Partner Program channels that create knowledge and information content.
As a matter of fact, YouTube suggests reviewing the automatically created dubs before publishing videos. “Not all videos can be successfully or accurately dubbed,” says YouTube. “Dubs are generated automatically, so they might contain errors due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise in the original video. We may also have challenges translating proper nouns, idioms, and jargon,” it adds.
There’ll be an “auto-dubbed” label tagged to YouTube videos
So, the next time you’re watching your favorite creator and wonder why they’re speaking one of the languages you understand besides English, keep an eye on the “auto-dubbed” label in the description box.
For video publishers: If this feature is available for your channel, you can find it in the Advanced Settings within YouTube Studio. Additionally, you can enable or disable auto-dubbing for your channel by going to Settings > Upload defaults > Advanced settings.
In all fairness, the feature isn’t perfect, nor can it replace human dubbing just yet. However, for what it is, it’s pretty cool. While it’s currently limited to educational and informational channels, it will soon roll out to more types of content.
