Well, all of us know that OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been a huge hit globally. It even saw the fastest sign-ups ever when it launched, though that record was later broken by Threads. More recently, the internet was full of people turning their photos into Ghibli-style art. And now, ChatGPT’s back with an update that might tempt a few of you: OpenAI boss Sam Altman announced that college students can try ChatGPT Plus for free.
ChatGPT is giving free Plus access to college students, here’s how you can apply
Per Altman’s post, ChatGPT Plus is now being offered free of charge for two months to eligible college students in the U.S. and Canada. This special promotion started on March 31, 2025, and will run until May 31, 2025. It’s a limited-time opportunity that lands perfectly during finals season, making it extra useful for studying, research, and writing.
To access the offer, you’ll need to verify your student status through SheerID, a trusted verification platform that checks enrollment information via school databases. In some cases, you might be required to log in using your university credentials or upload proof of enrollment.
If you’re already a paying Plus user and happen to be a student, you can still take advantage of the free offer. Once your student status is confirmed, your account will be automatically credited with two free months. Just remember: after the free period ends, unless canceled, the subscription will auto-renew at the usual monthly fee.
With ChatGPT Plus, you get faster responses, which is helpful when you’re in a rush. You also get access even when the system is busy, so you don’t have to wait during peak hours. Plus, you can use more advanced AI models like GPT-4.5, which is currently in preview. You shouldn’t miss the free opportunity, and make the most out of it till it lasts.
