WhatsApp will stop working on a number of older phones, including several Galaxy models, starting next year. For what it’s worth, this likely won’t affect you, unless you’re hanging onto a smartphone that’s more than a decade old or still running Android 4.0 (KitKat).
WhatsApp will stop working on these Galaxy phones starting January 1
WhatsApp has undergone a lot of changes recently, which is why it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the company to support decade-old smartphones. These devices aren’t widely used or available anymore. In short, it just doesn’t make sense for WhatsApp to keep the app running on phones with such a small user base. Starting January 1, 2024, WhatsApp will stop working on the following devices:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

If you’re still using one of these devices as your daily driver, it might be time to back up your chats and media files before the New Year rolls in. You might also want to check out some sweet deals on the latest Samsung Galaxy phones. Even better, you should check out our Mystery Box program when buying the Galaxy S25 series and score a free box packed with awesome goodies.
To be honest, this move isn’t entirely out of the blue for WhatsApp. A few months ago, the company made a similar announcement for iPhones running versions older than iOS 15.1. However, support for those iPhones will continue until May 2025, unlike the older Android phones, which will lose WhatsApp support starting January 1, 2024.
