Verizon wants to expand its satellite services, and the newly launched Galaxy S25 series is at the forefront of its new offering. Through a partnership with Skylo Technologies, Verizon plans to soon enable full satellite-based SMS and voice calls, allowing Galaxy S25 users to send texts and make calls in areas without cellular coverage. Pete Saladino, Global Head of Marketing at Skylo Technologies, told Mobile World Live (via Android Authority) that both companies are working to bring this service to market soon.
Verizon will soon roll satellite SMS and voice calling, and Galaxy S25 series will have the first bite
Right now, Verizonโs satellite SOS messaging service works with Galaxy S25 line and lets you send emergency texts and share location when youโre out of network coverage. It relies on the Snapdragon X80 5G, essential for satellite communication, which the Galaxy S25 series packs. Itโs quite surprising that Samsung didnโt talk about this during the launch at length. Folks at PCMag also agree on why isnโt Samsung talking about the Galaxy S25โs satellite connectivity. This is, by all means, an underrated and life-saving feature, literally.
Now, Verizon and Skylo are planning to expand this capability. Saladino confirmed that satellite SMS will be available soon, and a satellite voice calling service will follow, expected to be launched later this year or next. In addition to Skylo, Verizon has also partnered with AST SpaceMobile to test satellite-powered voice calls, full data access, and other cellular functions on Verizon smartphones, including the Galaxy S25. This collaboration will enable satellite connectivity without the need for special software or hardware updates.
Thereโs no specific launch timeline for when the satellite-based SMS and voice calling services will be available. But one thingโs for sure, it will make you want the Galaxy S25 series more, which goes on full sale today, as pre-orders end until the next launch.
