Third-Party Chargers Could Cause Paint Peeling on Your Galaxy Phone

by | Aug 29, 2024 | Galaxy Z, News

Samsung has issued a warning about the dangers of using cheap or counterfeit third-party chargers with Galaxy phones. These substandard chargers do not meet essential safety standards and can cause damage to your device, including peeling paint. The warning follows reports from several Galaxy Z Fold 6 users who noticed paint peeling on their shiny new foldables.

Samsung blames third-party chargers for paint peeling issue on Galaxy

Over the past few weeks, several Galaxy Z Fold 6 users have claimed that their phone is losing its paint in some places. This isn’t the first time we have seen such reports from Galaxy users. Older foldables, as well as non-folding phones, have had similar problems in the past. Samsung recently issued a statement on the matter, blaming third-party chargers for it.

In its statement published on Samsung’s official website in several countries, the company said its devices and accessories “undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are safe and function properly.” However, using incompatible third-party accessories such as chargers and EMS massagers can cause unforeseen issues like paint peeling.

“Generally, if a third-party charger comes from a reputable company, is of high quality, and adheres to the Qi standard, using it with your Galaxy device should not be a problem,” Samsung said. “However, there are third-party and counterfeit chargers on the market that do not meet those requirements and can corrode the metal of your device.”

Poorly made chargers are usually not properly grounded and can leak electric current. If you hold your Galaxy phone while charging, the leaked electric current can affect the anodization of the device’s metallic frame. This effectively delaminates the paint, causing it to peel off. Powering an Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) massager through your phone can cause similar damage.

Samsung advises you to keep your Galaxy phone away from your body while using EMS massagers. However, it doesn’t specify whether doing so while charging helps reduce or mitigate the problem. Either way, it’s safer to use official Samsung chargers or high-quality third-party chargers with your Galaxy phone. Samsung’s 45W adapter costs $50, while its 50W dual-charger is available for $60.
