Samsung is closing in on the official launch of its first-gen extended reality (XR) headset, tentatively named Galaxy XR. It is developing the product in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. While the company hasn’t disclosed much about it, a recently discovered patent application may have given us an early look at its controllers.
A patent shows potential controllers for Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset
Samsung has already confirmed the ongoing development of its XR headset. It recently hinted at a 2025 release of the device. Rumors say a developer version may be available later this year. While we await more information, the folks at Galaxy Club have discovered some interesting stuff. A patent application from the Korean firm includes images of what could be the controllers bundled with the headset.
Originally filed in November 2022 in South Korea, the patent was granted and published on the KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) website in August 2024. Titled Metaverse Controller (translated from Korean), it shows a set of controllers for use in combination with a “virtual reality instrument”. We can see a compact charging dock and two controllers that can be attached to the dock.
As usual, this patent doesn’t necessarily reveal the design of Samsung’s upcoming XR controllers. Companies often file numerous design patents for products that they may or may not pursue in the future. However, there is a strong possibility that these leaked images depict elements of the final device if not the full design. We expect more leaks and rumors about the Galaxy XR in the coming weeks.
The unannounced XR headset and its controllers are rumored to bear the model numbers SM-I130 and SM-I610. While this patent application does not offer concrete details beyond these images, the excitement is building. Qualcomm’s CEO recently hinted at Samsung developing a pair of smart glasses. It remains to be seen if it’s a different product or if the first-gen model will be glasses rather than a headset.
