Samsung wowed audiences at the CES 2025 First Look event with groundbreaking advancements in OLED display technology. Alongside its next-generation Neo QLED 8K TV and The Frame Pro with AI integration, the company showcased several innovative slidable OLED panels designed for laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Samsung also unveiled its largest foldable OLED screen yet.
Slidable Flex Duet, Solo, and Vertical: New horizons in Samsung’s display tech
Samsung Display introduced three prototypes of slidable OLED panels ahead of CES 2025: Slidable Flex Duet, Slidable Flex Solo, and Slidable Flex Vertical. Each solution is tailored for different devices and use cases. The Duet is an 8.1-inch screen that slides open from both sides, expanding into a 12.4-inch display. This panel can transform a mini tablet into a large-screen device when needed.
The Slidable Flex Solo is designed for laptops. This 13-inch OLED panel slides out from one side, creating a 17.3-inch display. It’s perfect for users needing extra screen space for multitasking, coding, or immersive content consumption. In its compact form, you get a sizeable tablet, while expanding it gives you a big-size laptop screen.
Additionally, Samsung unveiled Slidable Flex Vertical for smartphones. It’s a small, 5.1-inch OLED display that expands vertically into a 6.7-inch screen. It enables compact phones to stretch into regular-sized smartphones, providing versatility without sacrificing portability. This looks like a perfect solution for today’s smartphone needs as users demand larger screens for content consumption while wanting devices that remain pocket-friendly.
Samsung also brought a robot named OLEDog to the event. It’s a dog-shaped robot used in the company’s Vietnam display plant for infrastructure management. However, it repurposed the robot to tap dance on and kick OLED panels on the show floor, highlighting their impressive durability.
Samsung showcases a groundbreaking 18.1-inch foldable display, its largest yet
Alongside the three different slidable screens, Samsung showcased its largest foldable OLED panel at CES 2025. It’s a massive 18.1-inch panel that measures 13.1 inches when folded, offering versatile functionality. Its dual-purpose design allows you to use it as a laptop with a touchscreen keyboard or monitor with an external keyboard and mouse.
It’s unclear if Samsung plans to commercialize this folding display anytime soon. It previously showcased a similar panel with a 17.3-inch foldable screen in 2022, and that is yet to turn into a real product. But we should see big foldable tablets or laptops in the market a few years down the line. If not from Samsung, certainly from other industry leaders. Samsung supplies its displays to several companies worldwide.
