Samsung has unveiled an updated version of its proprietary generative AI model, Gauss. Samsung Gauss 2 brings performance and efficiency boosts. The multimodal model can handle various data types, including language, code, and images, and powers Galaxy AI features.
Samsung Gauss 2 improves Galaxy AI features
Samsung launched Gauss in November 2023 as an in-house generative AI model for AI features on Galaxy phones. The tool is named after the celebrated German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, famously known as the “Prince of Mathematicians.” Gauss pioneered the Normal Distribution Theory, also known as the Gaussian distribution, regarded as the foundational concept in machine learning (ML) and AI.
The Korean firm said this name reflects its ambitious vision for generative AI. It first used Gauss internally to enhance employee productivity before making it public earlier this year with the introduction of Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung has now launched the second generation model with major improvements. It unveiled Gauss 2 at the Korean edition of its annual developers’ conference a few hours ago.
As a multimodal generative AI model, Samsung Gauss 2 can simultaneously process language, code, images, and other data types. It comes in three variants — Compact, Balanced, and Supreme — catered to different purposes. Depending on the size of the task at hand and the computing environment, each model maximizes the utilization of the device’s computing resources to deliver optimized performance.
According to Samsung, Gauss 2 is up to three times faster than the previous version and supports 9 to 14 languages and various programming languages depending on the model. The company is already using the new version internally across the Device eXperience (DX) Division and various research institutes worldwide. The AI tool also helps call center staff to automatically categorize and summarize customer calls.
Gauss 2 will power Galaxy AI features on Galaxy smartphones, tablets, laptops, home appliances, and other Samsung products. Once rolled out, you’ll notice speed and performance improvements across features like Call Assist, Chat Assist, Sketch to Image, Generative AI Edit, Interpreter, Browsing Assist, Note Assist, Health Assist, and more. Samsung didn’t specify when it will upgrade Galaxy AI to Gauss 2.
