Samsung has released the August security update for the 5G variant of its first-gen Flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The update brings 50 vital security fixes to the aging clamshell foldable. The 4G variant, which arrived a few months earlier, is no longer eligible for updates. It received security patches until early 2024.
Galaxy Z Flip 5G picks up the August security update
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip (4G) in February 2020 and followed up with a 5G variant in July of that year (released in August 2020). As of February 2024, the former completed four years in the market. The company expectedly dropped official support for it. The phone no longer receives updates, not even security patches.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5G turns 4 this month. It’s unclear if Samsung will offer another year of support to the device (the Galaxy S20 arrived before it and is enjoying a fifth year of support). However, we can confirm that the latest security patch is now available for the first 5G clamshell foldable from Samsung. It’s rolling out in Europe.
The August 2024 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the European version of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G comes with the firmware build number F707BXXSFKXG1. It doesn’t bring anything more than the said 50 security fixes, which include two critical vulnerability patches. Samsung should widely roll out this update in the coming days.
Unless the Korean firm extends its support for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G for a fifth year, this might be the last update for the phone. If extended, it should get security patches until August 2025. Do not expect feature updates, though. This aging Samsung foldable is done receiving new features. Its successor, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, meanwhile, is all set to pick up Android 15 and One UI 7.0 later this year, or in early 2025.
