Aside from making some of the best smartphones, Samsung excels in display technology. Rivals like Apple also depend on Samsung Display, and any shortcomings could potentially derail their plans. In fact, they recently have. That’s the story with Samsung Display. Now, Samsung Display is said to be working on boosting the peak brightness of QD-OLED TVs to 4,000 nits by 2025. However, it might be a bit too soon to start celebrating.
Samsung plans QD-OLED panels with 4,000 nits brightness, soon or sooner
Samsung has an exciting TV lineup in store for CES 2025, which runs from January 7 to January 11. We’ll be reporting from Las Vegas to bring you all the latest updates on the coolest reveals. In the meantime, you can tune into Samsung’s press conference at CES 2025 from the comfort of your home.
At the event, Samsung is expected to unveil QD-OLED TVs with peak brightness reaching over 3,600 nits. There’s also speculation that we might see Samsung QD-OLED TVs hitting 4,000 nits, though it’s unclear when that will happen. Coming from display analyst Ross Young, we could rely on him. If Young’s predictions are correct, we could see 2025’s Samsung QD-OLED TVs reaching that 4,000 nits peak brightness.
To make things work, Samsung is developing a new process that eliminates the need for a separate CF/QD substrate. Instead, quantum dots will be printed straight onto the encapsulation layer, using just one layer. This will boost efficiency in Samsung Display’s new QD-OLED tech. Young added that by removing the extra substrate, the peak brightness could rise from 3,600 nits to 4,000 nits, with a target launch in 2025.
LG is also allegedly preparing to achieve a peak brightness of 3,700 nits for its TV lineup. The company will replace the more expensive Micro Lens Array technology with 4-stack OLED panels, which could mean no price hikes. Or possibly even more affordable TVs. For what it’s worth, Samsung Display will be showcasing at CES 2025, while LG Display may not be attending, according to reports from FlatPanelsHD.
