Samsung may not be done with curved smartphone displays. While it has been leaning toward flatter panels, the company appears to be working behind the scenes to address durability concerns with curved screens. A recent patent application suggests the ongoing development of more durable curved displays.
Curved displays could return to Samsung Galaxy phones in the future
First spotted by MSPowerUser, Samsung filed a design patent for a curved display in June 2024. This is after the company switched to a flat panel on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which arrived in January. The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently published a 33-page document outlining the Korean firm’s patented design.
The patent describes a system with two sealing layers and a specially designed section to prevent spills from the sealing liquid, potentially improving durability and assembly quality for future Galaxy S flagships. The blocking component is engineered to fit into grooves in the phone’s frame and align with the display’s curve, ensuring both structural integrity and a sleek design.
Of course, this is just a patented design and not a final product. In fact, one can’t even tell whether Samsung has such a product in the pipeline. As said earlier, the company recently shifted from curved displays to flat ones for its flagships. The upcoming Galaxy S25 series is expected to use flat screens across the lineup.
However, the timing of this patent application suggests Samsung is far from done with curved screens. It may be looking at a future where phones feature no physical buttons. Everything could be touchscreen, with curved displays offering dedicated areas for volume controls and more. Samsung recently secured a patent for a device without physical buttons. These two patents seem to align perfectly.
For the time being, Samsung doesn’t seem to have any smartphone with a curved screen in the pipeline. It will be interesting to see if the Korean firm reintroduces curved displays in future flagships.
