Samsung Galaxy Devices Won’t Cost More as US Exempts Phones from Tariffs

by | Apr 12, 2025 | News

Samsung Galaxy phones in the US might not see a major price hike after all. The Trump administration decided to leave smartphones and other big electronics out of the latest round of import tariffs, including Samsung Galaxy devices, according to CNN. That’s a reversal from earlier plans, and more importantly, good news for your wallet.

Galaxy phones and laptops are exempt from import tariffs, which means no major price hike

Just a few days ago, Samsung was about to raise the price of its Galaxy phones in the US by $50 to $200, thanks to new tariffs on imports from other countries. Samsung makes most of its phones in Vietnam, and with a hefty 46% import tariff on goods from there, Samsung was stuck choosing between eating the cost or passing it on to consumers. For any business, the latter is probably the safer bet.

But now, there’s some good news. A new ruling from US Customs and Border Protection says that smartphones, computer chips, and other electronics are exempt from these tariffs. This applies to products entering the US or released from warehouses as of April 5. For Samsung, this means current and future Galaxy phone shipments won’t face those higher costs. That also means we expect the Galaxy S25 Edge to be coming next month, as rumored.

That’s a huge relief for both Samsung and US consumers who love tech shopping. Yes, SammyGuru readers (and watchers), we’re talking to you. Galaxy phones make around 18% of the US smartphone market, per Counterpoint Research’s Q4 2024 report. Hence, any major price hike would’ve affected millions of buyers. Kind of like when Apple was facing potential price increases because of its reliance on Chinese factories. There was a rush to buy before the prices went up.

While Samsung might still shift some of its production from Vietnam to India (where tariffs are lower), the pressure to do so is now eased. The company will likely keep an eye on trade talks before making any major moves. For now, you can breathe easy knowing they won’t be hit with a price hike from tariffs.
