Samsung has been unusually late in rolling out the One UI 7.0 update. The Android 15-based update has been inexcusably delayed by four months, and there’s still no word on its release date. While this may not ease frustrations among Galaxy users, a Samsung executive recently revealed the real cause of this delay.
Samsung wanted to redefine the Galaxy experience with one UI 7.0, causing a massive delay
Sally Hyesoon Jeong, EVP and Head of the Framework R&D Team at Samsung’s mobile experience division, recently discussed the thought process behind the UI redesign in One UI 7.0. She revealed that the company had been planning this update for the past two to three years, aiming to create a groundbreaking experience rather than just another incremental update.
“For One UI 7, we take a slightly different approach. Usually, UI updates are made every year. However, for this version, we want to make a big breakthrough, which requires careful planning from two to three years before the project starts,” Sally explained. “We wanted to create something more impactful, and this longer preparation time allowed us to make significant improvements.”
The Samsung executive added that this “comprehensive process” was to ensure that every feature is tailored to the user’s needs. The Korean firm wanted to deliver an optimal experience for even the smallest features. Moreover, Samsung collaborated with Google to integrate Gemini AI into various apps. This required the creation of new APIs and SDKs, adding more complexity to the project.
Samsung’s quest for perfection and the additional time spent on these integrations and refinements contributed to the delay. While One UI 7.0 brings a significant UI redesign and numerous AI-powered features, users had to suffer from the scale of the update. Samsung plans to release a fourth beta update for the Galaxy S24 series next week. The stable rollout could begin later this month.
