India’s smartphone manufacturing industry is booming, and Samsung is leading the way. In 2024, Samsung strengthened its dominance, growing 7% year-on-year, thanks to a 13% surge in exports, notes Counterpoint Research. As the largest smartphone maker in India, Samsung continues to benefit from the Indian government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which encourages “Made in India” mission.
Samsung stays on top of “Made in India” smartphone market
Samsung’s Noida plant plays a big role in making smartphones across all price ranges, from budget models to premium flagships such as Galaxy S25 Ultra. By producing these phones locally, the company keeps prices competitive, speeds up supply, and makes devices more available for Indian buyers. More importantly, Samsung’s investment in Indian manufacturing creates jobs and strengthens India’s place in the global supply chain.
Vivo took second place in smartphone manufacturing with a 14% market share, thanks to its strong offline sales and distribution network. Oppo, however, struggled. Its market share dropped from 19% in 2023 to 12% in 2024 due to rising competition and changes in its contract manufacturing strategy. Meanwhile, Dixon became the top manufacturer in the overall mobile handset market, making both feature phones and smartphones. The company grew 39% year-on-year, helped by partnerships with brands like Transsion and realme.
With more companies investing in local production, India’s smartphone industry is expected to grow even more in 2025. The main goal now is to depend less on imports and strengthen India’s role in the global supply chain. The next year will show if these efforts can keep up long-term growth.
