A few years ago, Samsung’s LCDs were a big deal in the display market. But their popularity quickly dropped as LEDs became more popular. The demand for LCDs decreased, and competition from Chinese companies selling displays at lower prices made it harder for Samsung to keep up.
This is why Samsung Display decided to leave the LCD business. It has been selling off its LCD stock to make room for more advanced display technologies. After all, the world isn’t so excited about LCDs anymore.
Samsung Display is planning to sell more Gen 8 LCD production equipment
Now, Samsung Display is looking to sell more of its Gen 8 LCD production equipment, according to a report from TheElec. This is part of Samsung’s plan to fully exit the LCD market. What’s interesting is Samsung started the process in 2022 and hasn’t fully done it. Since then, the company has been gradually getting rid of related equipment and assets.
Samsung Display’s L8 factory, where the company used to produce LCDs, is now being reorganized. Some of the old LCD production lines (L8-1-1, L8-2-1, L8-1-2, and L8-2-2) have already been changed into lines for making more advanced Gen 8 quantum dot (QD)-OLED and IT OLED panels. However, two of the older lines (L8-1-2 and L8-2-2), which used to make LCDs, haven’t been updated with new technology yet. So once Samsung clears off the old stock, it might make room for more.
Samsung Display has listed the equipment for sale through its affiliate, Samsung C&T. However, there may not be much demand for the Gen 8 LCD equipment. This is because Chinese companies have already moved on to using larger and more cost-efficient Gen 10 LCD lines.
