Samsung is continuously working with various industry partners to enhance its apps and camera quality. Recently, Google announced that Instagram is using its Android Camera Extensions API to improve the Night Mode images on Galaxy flagships. This partnership aims to deliver brighter, clearer low-light photos directly within the Instagram app.
Instagram uses Android features to improve Night Mode images
Google’s Android Camera Extensions API offers a bunch of features to enhance the image quality. There’s an Auto mode that adjusts the extension according to the scene. The API also includes a dedicated Bokeh mode for portrait photos, face retouch tools, HDR, and a Night Mode. Several Android OEMs already use these extensions, representing over 75 million monthly active users.
According to Google, Instagram now uses the Night Mode extension for its Android app. When capturing photos directly from the app at night, users will see a moon icon to activate Night Mode for better image quality. This feature is currently available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, and recent Pixels. More Galaxy devices are expected to receive this update in the coming months.
The new low-light camera enhancements on Instagram seem to be already very popular among the users of supported Galaxy and Pixel devices. “Night Mode has increased the number of photos captured and shared with the Instagram camera, since the quality of the photos are now visibly better in low-light scenes,” said Jin Cui, an Instagram Engineer.
This isn’t the first time Samsung has worked closely with Instagram to enhance the Galaxy experience. In 2022, the company enabled native camera features and tools for the Meta-owned social media platform. Those upgrades were also extended to Snapchat and TikTok. If you use a Galaxy flagship, expect the latest Instagram upgrade to hit your phone soon.
