Google Photos Now Smarter With Gemini Integration: Here’s How It Works

by | Apr 3, 2025 | News

What happens when a company owns nearly all the apps on your phone and develops an AI chatbot? It tries to integrate it into every possible nook and corner. That’s exactly what Google is doing with Gemini, and while it may seem like just another AI expansion, this particular integration with Google Photos is actually quite useful.

With this update, you can now use Gemini to search for specific images, recall past memories, and even extract important details from your photos. You can do a bunch of stuff like searching for an image with specific details, and a lot of tasks you can think of. Thankfully, Google provides a support document (via 9to5Google) with prompts that help us easily find photos using Gemini.

Gemini can dig into Google Photos smartly with natural phrases

Instead of relying on Google Photos‘ traditional search bar, Gemini allows you to find images using conversational prompts. You can simply type @Google Photos or my photos into the Gemini app on your Galaxy and describe what you’re looking for. Here are some example prompts that Gemini can understand:

  • Your face groups or relationships you’ve saved in Photos. Eg: “Find my photos of Alex”
  • Location or date the photo was taken. Eg: “Show my photos from my most recent trip” or “Show my photos from last summer”
  • Description of what’s in the photo. Eg: “Show me recent selfies” or “Find my photos of landscapes”
  • Your current conversation with the Gemini mobile app

Apart from that, Gemini can also analyze your photos and retrieve details you may have forgotten. You can try asking some of these:

  • @Google Photos what themes have we had for Lena’s birthday parties?
  • @Google Photos what did we eat at the hotel in Stanly?
  • @Google Photos what were some of the things we ate in Mexico City?
  • @Google Photos what are the top 10 things we saw on our last trip?
  • @Google Photos what’s my driver’s license number?

Right now, this feature is gradually rolling out to a select group of users, with a wider release expected soon. Let us know if you’re one of the lucky few who can try it already. I tested several accounts, but unfortunately, it’s not here yet.
