UPDATE 10/8 at 1:27 PM MST: According to Android Authority, this claim has been disputed directly by Google’s DeepMind team. They claim the original language was erroneous.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Google may have accidentally confirmed rumors that Samsung will use a MediaTek chipset in the Galaxy S25. This slip came from a Google DeepMind blog post discussing AlphaChip. It mentioned MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 5G chipsets being used in Samsung mobile phones. Interestingly, no Galaxy flagship to date has featured a Dimensity processor, adding fuel to speculation about the upcoming S25.
“External organizations are also adopting and building on AlphaChip. For example, MediaTek, one of the top chip design companies in the world, extended AlphaChip to accelerate development of their most advanced chips — like the Dimensity Flagship 5G used in Samsung mobile phones — while improving power, performance and chip area,” the DeepMind blog post stated while discussing AlphaChip’s impact (h/t Notebookcheck).
Galaxy S25 looks set to feature MediaTek’s Dimensity processor
Rumors about Samsung potentially equipping the Galaxy S25 phones with a MediaTek chipset aren’t new. We first heard about it in May. A few days ago, the rumor resurfaced with additional information. A relatively unknown source on X said only the base model will use the Dimensity 9400. They didn’t specify if MediaTek will power the phone globally or if the US version will still get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
Meanwhile, the Korean media reported that Samsung is struggling with poor yields of its next-gen Exynos 2500 in-house flagship processor. There are series concerns about its timely production for the Galaxy S25 series. As such, the company might ship the new flagships with external chips. Since the Dimensity 9400 is said to be at least 20% cheaper than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, it might use the former in the base model.
The Google blog post only adds more fuel to the ongoing speculation. While Samsung introduced flagship Dimensity processors to its tablets this year — the Galaxy Tab S10 series uses Dimensity 9300+ — no flagship phone runs on a MediaTek chip yet. It appears the Galaxy S25 will be the first to make the shift. Whether this move proves to be a game-changer or just another experiment remains to be seen.
