Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition Promises Game-Changing Upgrades

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is shaping up to be a game-changer. Following exciting rumors of major camera upgrades, the device has now sparked even more buzz with new information from a trusted tipster hinting at a significant display upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The new slim foldable reportedly enters mass production in September. A global launch looks out of the cards, though.

Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition to introduce advanced display technology

According to tipster Ross Young, a display industry veteran, Samsung will slap a UFG panel over the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition’s folding display. It is a special type of UTG (ultra-thin glass) with uneven thickness. The panel is thinner in the seam area along which the device folds. This helps reduce the crease on the screen. The rest of the panel is thicker than regular UTG for improved scratch resistance and durability.

The tipster also confirmed earlier rumors that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition has a 200MP primary rear camera. Available details suggest it’s the same camera as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Rumors have also hinted at an upgraded under-display selfie camera (UDC) on the inside. Samsung is finally moving on from the 4MP solution it has been using since 2021. The upcoming slim foldable may get a 5MP UDC for selfies.

Samsung has dropped S Pen support from the phone to reduce thickness. With no S Pen digitizer in the display assembly and a titanium backplate, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition measures 10.6mm thick when folded and 4.9mm when unfolded. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 12.1mm and 5.6mm, respectively. The lack of S Pen support also helps offset the added cost of camera and display upgrades and hinge improvements.

Not just a new type of display protection, but the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition also features bigger screens. With an 8-inch folding display and a 6.5-inch cover display, it is larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (7.6-inch and 6.3-inch, respectively). Samsung plans to primarily sell the device in China, with South Korea seeing limited availability. The foldable may not be officially available in any other market. Stay tuned for its launch.
