Samsung is on a roll today. Well, it still hasn’t delivered on its promise to launch One UI 7.0 beta programs for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. But on the bright side, the company released the latest security patch for these foldables, alongside the Galaxy S24 series. The March security update is now making its way to the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5, Fold 4, and Flip 4 as well.
March update rolled out for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5, Fold 4, and Flip 4
Like the Galaxy S24 trio, Fold 6, and Flip 6, Samsung has begun the March SMR (Security Maintenance Release) rollout for its 2023 and 2022 foldables in South Korea. Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 users in its home market are receiving the new update with firmware build numbers F946NKSS5DYBE and F731NKSS5DYBE, respectively.
Those for the Fold 4 and Flip 4 are F936NKSS6GYBD and F721NKSS6GYBD, respectively. The changelog confirms that the update is all about this month’s security fixes. While there aren’t any new features or functional enhancements in tow, the latest firmware release brings a security policy upgrade to all four foldables. This means users cannot roll back to the previous firmware build after installing the March security update.
For the uninitiated, the fifth digit from the right end of the build number is the security policy identifier. The stock firmware always has “1” in that place. It changes to 2, 3, 4, and so on with every update to the security policy. The February update for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 carried the build number F946NKSS4DYAA, while it was F731NKSS4DYAA for the Flip 5, F936NKSS5GYA5 for the Fold 4, and F721NKSS5GYA5 for the Flip 4.
As you can see, the security policy identifier has changed from 4 to 5 with the March update for 2023 foldables and from 5 to 6 for 2022 foldables, which means upgrades to internal policies. The March SMR also patches over 50 vulnerabilities across the Galaxy family, 11 of which are rated “critical” flaws by Google. Samsung will soon update more devices to the new security patch.
