Alongside more RAM, Samsung may have reserved another key upgrade for its next Ultra flagship. The Galaxy S25 Ultra will reportedly feature an M14 OLED display, while the other models reuse M13 OLEDs. The company has already supplied M14 OLEDs for the latest iPhones and Pixels.
Only the Galaxy S25 Ultra has an M14 OLED display
Samsung supplies OLED displays to many competing smartphone makers, including Apple and Google. It recently introduced M14 OLED materials to its flagship display panels — the Galaxy S24 series has M13 OLED panels. As display industry veteran Ross Young noted, the new materials bring efficiency and durability gains thanks to “a change in the red host material.”
The Korean firm has already made OLED displays for the iPhone 16 series and Pixel 9 series using M14 materials. It was natural for fans to expect the same upgrade on the Galaxy S25 series. However, it turns out Samsung doesn’t plan to offer M14 displays on all three models. The same source claims that only the Ultra has an improved OLED panel. Others remain on M13 OLEDs.
Since Samsung’s smartphone division operates independently of the display manufacturing unit, they have a buy-sell relationship. The same goes for the chip and camera manufacturing divisions. The smartphone unit can buy chips, displays, or cameras from other vendors if it finds a better deal. Moreover, it can choose to not buy the latest technologies from its sister firms.
It appears the firm decided to only use M14 OLEDs on the Galaxy S25 Ultra to save cost. M13 OLEDs probably cost less as they aren’t the most advanced today. The efficiency and durability gains we are looking at shouldn’t be massive either, so Samsung might get away with it. That said, the firm should have offered the latest technologies in new flagships. The Galaxy S25 series arrives in early 2025 with Android 15.
