Galaxy S25 Test Units Run Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, Exynos 2500 Future Unclear

by | Sep 11, 2024 | Galaxy S, News

Despite the ongoing development of Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2500, the chip may not power the Galaxy S25 series. All current S25 test units reportedly run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The company may not scrap the Exynos processor though. It may keep it for the next-gen Galaxy foldables.

Samsung is currently testing the Galaxy S25 with Snapdragon

There have been contrasting reports about Samsung’s chip strategy for the Galaxy S25 series. Since the company has already confirmed the existence of the Exynos 2500, it was widely believed that the chip will power the smaller two models in most parts of the world, similar to the S24 lineup. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was expected to power the Ultra globally and others in the US and China.

However, the Korean media recently said that Samsung has decided to go all-in with the Snapdragon chip. It hasn’t scrapped the Exynos 2500 but the in-house processor won’t power the Galaxy S25. Instead, the company plans to use it in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 next year. If true, those will be the first Samsung foldables to feature an Exynos chip. All previous models are powered by Snapdragon.

Amidst all this, a leak surfaced recently showing the Exynos 2500 on a reference design. This fueled rumors that Samsung might still be working to make the chip ready for its upcoming flagships. However, chances are looking slim. According to tipster @chunvn8888 on X, all Galaxy S25 test units are currently powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. There is no Exynos version in sight yet.

Since the devices are still about four months away, Samsung may not have much time left to decide — it has to finalize everything a few months before launch for timely production. We should soon get a confirmation about the Exynos 2500’s future, whether it will power the Galaxy S25 series or only the 2025 Galaxy foldables. At this point, the upcoming flagships are shaping up to be Snapdragon-only.
