Android users have been enjoying the seamless updates for a while now, but Galaxy users have been left in the dust. Thankfully, though, the upcoming Galaxy S25 series will finally support seamless updates.
Galaxy S25 series will bring support for seamless updates
To put it simply, seamless updates allow you to install system updates in the background and apply them when you reboot, saving you time and letting you use your phone without interruption. Here’s a surprising fact: Android first introduced seamless updates with the Nougat 7.1 update. And that was back in 2016 — over eight years ago.
Now, Samsung is finally catching up. The upcoming Galaxy S25 series, set to launch next month, will include seamless updates. Leaked files suggest that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will support this feature, and it’s likely that the S25 and S25 Plus will as well. This was hinted at earlier (via chunvn8888), and AssembleDebug has now confirmed the report.
Do you wonder how seamless updates actually work?
If you’re a long-time Galaxy user, you might be wondering how this whole seamless update thing works. Well, it’s pretty simple. Seamless updates use two partitions: Slot A and Slot B. The system runs on one slot while the other serves as a backup. When an update is installed, it goes to the backup slot. After a reboot, the phone switches to the updated slot, so you can avoid the dreaded waiting time on update screens.
If the update fails for any reason, the phone can still boot from the original working slot. While this method does require more storage than traditional updates, it’s not a big deal for flagship phones with larger storage capacities. In the end, it’s a welcome upgrade. Better late than never, right?
With the launch of the Galaxy S25 series just around the corner, excitement is building as we approach the January event. If everything goes according to plan, we could get our first official look on January 22.
