Samsung aims to protect its Galaxy device users from spam messages with its built-in spam filtering features. The company has recently teamed up with KT (South Korea’s largest telecom carrier) to use its AI-based “malicious text alert” service for multimedia messaging (MMS). Starting next month, this service will also be available on several Samsung Galaxy devices, probably for those on the KT network only, of course, in South Korea.
Samsung to integrate KT’s “malicious text alert” service into its Galaxy devices
This service uses artificial intelligence to identify suspicious messages in real-time. It automatically scans incoming texts and displays the phrase ‘suspected as a malicious text’ on spam and smishing suspicion messages. The best thing is that users do not need to download a separate app to enable this functionality on Galaxy devices. Interestingly, it has already been available for short messages (SMS) since December last year — about 7 million KT customers across 37 types of Samsung devices are getting benefits from it. And now, Samsung will integrate this “malicious text alert” tool into its multimedia messaging service starting from May 2025.
“We will carefully discriminate even ambiguous characters at the boundary between spam and non-spam so that customers can use communication services more safely. We will continue to expand differentiated services to prevent customer damage in cooperation with Samsung Electronics,” said Lee Byung-moo, head of KT AX Innovation Support Division (via Korean outlet Maeil Business Newspaper). Speaking of the effectiveness of the service, KT says it identified 99% of the detected messages as malicious, including gambling, illegal loans, and adult content.
Last month, we reported that Samsung is working on an AI-powered spam filter to block malicious messages. It will soon be available for Korean Galaxy devices starting from the Galaxy S25 series, probably without any carrier restrictions. Later, the company will gradually roll out to the older Galaxy models. While this AI spam filter will initially be limited to Korea, Samsung could expand it to other markets too in the future.
