Samsung is a tech behemoth by all means. Simply put, it’s a massive company that makes almost everything, from phones and home appliances to computers, medical equipment, and military supplies. As such, the company has multiple divisions, one of which is its Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, led by president TM Roh since 2020.
TM Roh has had a stellar career at Samsung. He first joined the company in 1997 and has played various key roles within the company. While opinions on his leadership are mixed, he’s best known for launching several flagships, including the Galaxy S24 series. Recently, though, speculation has been swirling around Reddit and other forums: Could Roh be stepping down as head of Samsung Mobile? And if a recent post by reliable tipster Ice Universe is anything to go by, Won-joon Choi, the current EVP & Head of Mobile R&D, could be stepping into his shoes.
Is TM Roh about to step down as head of Samsung Mobile?
There’s no correct answer to this question—after all, Samsung, like any major conglomerate, tends to keep such details under wraps. But given Ice Universe’s track record of leaking insider news, there’s a possibility that this rumor could hold some weight. The tipster recently posted an image of Won-joon Choi, along with a cryptic message: “He’s coming.” This has only fueled the speculation further.
Could Won-joon Choi be the right successor to TM Roh’s legacy?
Whether or not Won-joon Choi will replace TM Roh remains to be seen. That said, it’s worth looking at his qualifications and how he stacks up against the current head of Samsung Mobile.
Choi has a strong background in wireless comms. Being a Qualcomm alum, he has gained experience in chipset design — which is very crucial when it comes to the current generation of AI-powered phones. More importantly, he’s also played key roles in Samsung’s success in the foldable market. His focus on tech innovation is likely why many think he’s a strong candidate to succeed Roh.
If Choi does take over, it’s plausible we could see a leadership transition before Samsung reveals its tri-fold smartphone. Again, purely speculative at this point, but his experience with foldable tech makes this scenario seem more likely.
That said, recently when Samsung launched Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Watch7 line, it drew comparisons to Apple’s AirPods and Watch line, with people accussing Samsung of plagiarizing Apple. This reportedly even reached the ears of Samsung Electronics chief Jay Y. Lee, who then told the MX division to reassess its product strategy. It’s unclear whether these internal discussions are tied to leadership changes, but they could be another piece of the puzzle.
For now, though, it’s all speculation. Until something official comes from Samsung, it’s best to take it with a pinch of salt.
Either way, Samsung has a promising lineup for 2025, including the Galaxy S25 series, followed by the Galaxy S25 Slim, and perhaps, if we’re lucky, the debut of Samsung’s very own tri-fold phone.
