Goodbye, Gemini! ChatGPT Can Now Be Your Default Assistant on Galaxy Devices

by | Mar 17, 2025 | News, Samsung Apps

For years, Google’s AI assistants—first Assistant and now Gemini—have ruled Android. While Android’s open ecosystem allows for various third-party AI options, most couldn’t be set as the default assistant. That’s changing with OpenAI’s latest beta update, which lets you set ChatGPT as default digital assistant. This means Galaxy users who prefer ChatGPT over Gemini or other alternatives can now set it as their default assistant.

You can set ChatGPT as your default assistant, ditching Gemini

As Android Authority reports, with the v1.2025.070 beta update, ChatGPT can now be triggered using the same gestures and button presses previously reserved for Gemini. You can launch it by swiping up from the bottom corner (gesture navigation), long-pressing the home button (three-button navigation), or holding the power button (if enabled). When activated, ChatGPT opens in voice mode with a floating overlay on the screen, making interactions faster and more seamless.

However, ChatGPT still has some limitations compared to Gemini or even competitors like Perplexity. It cannot be summoned with a wake word like “Hey ChatGPT” since Android reserves hotword activation for preinstalled apps with privileged API access. Additionally, while its voice mode is functional, it may not yet match Gemini’s real-time responsiveness or Perplexity’s conversational depth.

Despite these limitations, this update is a big step forward for ChatGPT on Android. It gives users more control over which AI assistant they use, loosening Google’s grip on digital assistants. As OpenAI improves its Android integration, ChatGPT could become a solid alternative for those wanting something beyond Gemini.

For those eager to try it out, the beta version of ChatGPT beta v1.2025.070 is now available. You can set it as your default assistant through Android’s settings, bringing OpenAI’s AI experience one step closer to becoming a true competitor on mobile devices. What do you think of this update?
