Android Auto Gains Enhanced EV Compatibility with new Update

by | Nov 4, 2024 | News, Updates

Google has rolled out another important update for its Android Auto app. The latest release is tailored specifically for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. This update introduces several exciting EV features and is available on the Google Play Store for Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy family.

New Android Auto update makes life easier for EV drivers

The new stable version of Android Auto, version 13.2, includes support for two additional charging connectors. Google’s automotive platform now supports the Type 6 and the Light Electric Combined Charging System (LECCS). This is in addition to the existing compatible systems like the North American Charging Standard (NACS) used by Tesla and Type 2.

The introduction of LECCS is interesting because it is primarily used in light EVs such as electric bikes and scooters. This might be an indication that Google might potentially extend Android Auto to more EVs beyond cars. Not necessarily a full-fledged system but something to provide riders with valuable information on their scooter’s display.

Designed and engineered in India, LECCS is used in Ather electric scooters. Ather recently partnered with Google to provide real-time information on LECCS-compatible charging stations. In addition to LECCS support, the latest Android Auto update enhances the experience for EV drivers by enabling compatibility with vehicles from brands that use NACS.

This includes automakers like Ford, GM, Kia, Volvo, and Rivian, showing Google’s commitment to improving convenience for electric vehicle owners. The company continues to refine Android Auto, adding features to make it more reliable and user-friendly. Recently, it added options for reporting accidents and road hazards directly through the app.

Meanwhile, Google has discontinued Android Auto support for devices running Android 8 or older. Users with this older version can no longer access the app. From now on, only devices with Android 9 or higher will receive new features and updates. You can install the latest update from the Play Store.
