While Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra bagged the “Smartphone of the Year” award at the NAG Awards 2024, it has a major flaw. The Galaxy S24 Ultra features the latest Corning Gorilla Armor glass on its display, offering its own set of benefits. However, several users have reported that the Galaxy S24’s glare-free oleophobic display coating doesn’t seem to be holding up well, with many sharing that it has come off on social media.
Oleophobic coating issue on the Galaxy S24 Ultra display persists
We’re talking about the oleophobic coating issues again because YouTuber Zaryab Khan recently shared his experience on X. Khan mentioned that the S24 Ultra’s oleophobic coating started coming off after “almost” a year of use. He’s not alone, though. We also faced similar issues after just six months of use — half the time Khan is claiming.

According to Khan, the display is covered in smudges and fingerprints. It seems that regular use wears down the oleophobic coating on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. There are also marks on the screen, but Khan clarified that they aren’t scratches—just marks left by the coating.
There are complaints everywhere
Reddit is also full of people ranting about the same problems. “I love that matte non-reflective screen but holy cow it got so grimy and smudgy quick. I need to carry a fiber cloth with me all the time and wipe it down regularly. Otherwise it gets disgusting looking,” says one. “My Galaxy S24 Ultra has been getting the worst oily smudges recently. The smudges make it super hard to see the screen in sunlight and are so hard to remove even when wiping with microfiber cloth,” wrote original poster.
For what it’s worth, you could try using a high-quality tempered glass or flexible film screen protector with its own oleophobic layer to protect the Galaxy S24 Ultra display from smudges. Also, avoid harsh chemicals and stick to a microfiber cloth to clean the display.
