When it comes to OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels, LG Display and Samsung Display are the most prominent players in the industry. Now, Samsung Display is planning to boost its small- and mid-sized OLED panels production by 10 percent in 2025, reports South Korean monthly Business Korea.
Samsung will triple OLED units’ production for foldables in 2025
Samsung’s 2025 calendar seems ambitious, and we’re not only talking about the upcoming Galaxy S25 series or any other product. The company wants to make around 12.5 million IT OLED units, a major jump over this year’s 8 million. Meanwhile, the foldable display is set to triple, up to 12.5 million units, mainly for the Galaxy Z Fold series.
Usually, as you’d expect, Samsung’s typical bread and butter comes from smartphones, but Samsung is a tech conglomerate by all means with a big chunk of its revenue coming from other business divisions. The firm has had little success with the foundry business lately, so it likely needs a fresh direction. Who knows this might be a part of restrategizing the mega business.
Samsung is paying close attention to the growing demand for OLED tablets
Canalys notes worldwide tablet shipments grew by 11% year on year in the last quarter, Q3 2024. So definitely people are showing more interest in tablets compared to recent years, much of what could be attributed to this year’s iPad and iPad mini launch in May and October respectively. Samsung sure wouldn’t want to miss any bite of it. This is why Samsung is banking on this shift to pick up steam, with an eye on doubling down in 2025 if demand grows as expected.
Notably, Samsung isn’t alone in the OLED game. Apple, its biggest competition and also apparently its biggest client, is now sourcing panels from LG and BOE as well. This means Samsung Display has some serious competition. The Korean firm must be at the top of its game to stay ahead of its competitors.
