Samsung seems to have forgotten to update its Wear OS smartwatches. Not only have new features been absent, but even security patches have been scarce lately. Most Galaxy Watch models haven’t received an update in months. The reason behind this delay is unclear, as the company has remained silent on the matter.
Galaxy Watch users have been left waiting with no updates in sight
After months of beta testing, Samsung recently started rolling out the One UI 6 Watch update to the Galaxy Watch 6 lineup. However, the Wear OS 5-based update has been limited to beta testers. While we expect a public rollout soon, the situation is far from ideal for Galaxy Watch users. The company took over four months to prepare One UI 6 Watch for older models and still isn’t ready for a global release.
Worst yet, Samsung hasn’t rolled out a new security patch to its watches in nearly eight months. The Galaxy Watch 4, Watch 5 and Watch 6 lineups are hanging on the March 2024 build. The latest Galaxy Watch Ultra, Watch 7, and Watch Fe are currently on the June 2024 security patch. This is despite the Ultra and Watch 7 arriving on the market in late July. They haven’t received recent security patches yet.
This situation is unusual, as Samsung promises quarterly security updates for all Galaxy Watches. It seems the company’s software division, specifically the team responsible for updates, is currently facing some challenges. Typically, it would have released the Android 15-based One UI 7.0 update for phones and tablets by now but hasn’t yet begun a beta program. The stable version isn’t coming until 2025.
Interestingly, Google also delayed its Android 15 rollout this year. Moreover, its Pixel Watch lineup has been inconsistent with security updates lately. Maybe the concerned parties are preparing something big. The reason behind Samsung’s delay in security patches for its Galaxy Watches remains speculative at this point, but we’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
