This Is How Samsung Made the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition so Slim

by | Oct 26, 2024 | Galaxy Z, News

Samsung introduced its latest foldable Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition smartphone. The new offering is a refined version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The latest phone is much slimmer and sleeker than its predecessor. It appears that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition utilizes the UTG (Ultra-thin Glass) technology. It is the same tech found on the other Fold series models. However, the brand did increase the number of parts significantly in the hinge of the new device. This allowed the brand to achieve a slimmer profile on the latest foldable.

Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition’s hinge has more parts, which makes it slimmer

According to a report from Korea’s The Elec, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition’s hinge has nearly 130 to 140 components or parts. The number is much higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has 60-70 parts. The complex new hinge structure as well as the parts have allowed the brand to make it much slimmer. The extra parts don’t compromise the durability of the screen.

Earlier, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition was expected to feature UTG with selective watching. However, the new UTI component hasn’t received approval for mass production. That’s why the phone still has the previous UTG display technology. The next Z Folds are expected to utilize the new UTI tech. It will enhance the hardness of the surface while reducing the visible crease in the center of the foldable panels.

The phone also has a new TItanium backplate

Furthermore, the report suggests that the backplate or support structure of the Galaxy Z Fold SE is made of titanium. It doesn’t have the conventional steel metal used in the earlier Fold series offerings. The titanium plate offers superior strength with less weight, which is ideal for a slim profile. Also, the titanium material enhances the overall durability of the device.

That said, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is 10.6mm thin in the folded mode. It measures just 4.9mm around the waist in the unfolded mode. It is 1.5mm slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in the folded mode. In addition, the phone is 3 grams lighter than the Fold 6.
