Google May Tap Samsung for Part of Next Gen AI Chip

Google could be working more closely with Samsung for its next generation AI chips. A new report says Alphabet is in talks with Samsung to manufacture part of its upcoming Tensor Processing Units (TPU). Nothing is confirmed yet, but it suggests Google is expanding beyond its usual chip partners.
Samsung could build key component for Google’s Icefish AI chip
Samsung may handle a key part of the Icefish chip. According to the report from The Independent, Google still plans to use TSMC for the main processor, but Samsung could build the component that links the chip to memory. This part would use Samsung’s advanced 2nm process.
Google is also said to be teaming up with MediaTek for the chip design. Icefish is still in development, so details may change over time. If things stay on track, mass production could begin around 2028, which means this project is still in its early stages.
This deal would be important for Samsung. The company has been pushing to grow its contract chip manufacturing business. Winning work from Google would be a strong signal that its 2 nanometer tech is competitive. Smaller chips like these can offer better performance and improved power efficiency.
Neither company has confirmed anything yet. Samsung declined to comment, and Google hasn’t responded, according to Reuters. Still, this matches Samsung’s earlier plans to bring in more advanced chip clients. It’s even considering expanding its Texas facilities to handle future demand.
The move also shows Google may be trying to rely less on TSMC. The chipmaker is under pressure due to rising AI demand, which could slow things down. Another recent report said Google might also work with Intel to produce millions of AI chips later this decade.
Google’s in house AI chips are becoming more important for its cloud business. They’re seen as an alternative to Nvidia GPUs, which still lead the market. Earlier this year, Google introduced new chips focused on AI training and inference, showing how serious it is about this space.
