Samsung Confirms Galaxy Z Fold 2 Will No Longer Receive Updates

by | Oct 8, 2024 | Galaxy Z, News

Samsung recently updated the list of eligible Galaxy devices for One UI updates and security patches. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has been removed from this list. This aging foldable smartphone will no longer receive updates, not even security patches.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 is done getting updates from Samsung

Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in August 2020, with a market release the following month. At that time, the company provided three major Android OS updates and four years of security patches. The device originally came with Android 10 and received updates up to Android 13, released last year. Its latest One UI version, One UI 5.1.1, was also released in late 2023.

Since then, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has only received security updates. Now that we have stepped into October 2024, the promised four years of security support have elapsed. As such, the foldable won’t receive new security patches going forward. It may pick up one last security update in some countries, but Samsung will end support for the device before the year is over.

Although the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will no longer receive further updates from Samsung, it remains a secure and functional device for everyday use. However, you should consider upgrading to a newer model soon. With no security patches in the pipeline, you never know when the device might fall prey to a security vulnerability. The company patches dozens of vulnerabilities every month.

If you are considering an upgrade, Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. Like all flagship Galaxy phones launched in 2024, these foldables will receive major OS and security updates for seven years. The first major update will be Android 15-based One UI 7, which arrives early next year. The Korean firm will begin One UI 7 beta later this year, starting with the Galaxy S24 series. Stay tuned for more updates.
