The Galaxy S24 FE is the cheapest Samsung product to be eligible for seven years of updates. It will get as many updates as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. The long journey begins today with the release of the September security patch. The first update for the phone also brings performance optimizations.
Galaxy S24 FE gets its first update with the September security patch
Launched on September 26, Samsung opened general sales of the Galaxy S24 FE on Thursday, October 3. At $650, the device offers a good bang for its buck. Early buyers will have a software update waiting for them out of the box. As of this writing, we can confirm the availability of this update for carrier-locked units in the US. A wider rollout may begin anytime now.
The US units are receiving the update with the firmware build number S721USQU1AXI3. The official changelog mentions September 2024 security fixes and performance improvements. While no new feature has been added to the device — it shipped with the latest One UI version based on Android 14 — the update likely optimizes the software for a smoother experience.
Samsung has already revealed that the September security patch, aka SMR (Security Maintenance Release), addresses 67 vulnerabilities across the Galaxy family, including a critical one. The Galaxy S24 FE was probably affected by some of these vulnerabilities. It’s nice that the company patched them even before the device reached most of the early buyers.
The Galaxy S24 FE is currently eligible for monthly security patches, so it will also receive the Octobver SMR sometime this month or early next month. The first major feature update may not arrive until 2025, though. Samsung doesn’t plan to roll out the Android 15-based One UI 7 update to other devices before the Galaxy S25 launch. The new flagships should go official in the first half of January.
