Google Play Store Could Soon Offer Cheaper Plans Before You Cancel

Samsung offers two ways to download an app, but the Play Store’s library is unparalleled. That’s one reason most of us prefer it, and Google keeps adding more features. Now, Google is tweaking how subscriptions work on the Play Store, giving developers more influence over how users cancel recurring payments.
Google lets developers offer cheaper plans when you try to cancel
You can already cancel an active app subscription easily on the Play Store. However, an upcoming change will add extra prompts to try to keep users from leaving. After all, subscriptions bring in money for both developers and the Play Store.
Announced during Google I/O, the update adds downgrade options directly into the cancellation flow. When users tap cancel, they will still see the usual confirmation screen, but developers can now show cheaper plans to encourage users to switch instead of leaving completely.
According to Google, this feature will run on an updated in-app Subscription Management API. Diego Dayan said developers can add plan-switching tools inside their apps, and also place downgrade offers in the cancellation flow itself, reaching users right when they are about to unsubscribe.
Screenshots also suggest developers could offer limited-time discounts, adding another way to convince users to stay. For developers, this change is a clear win. Subscription-based apps often struggle with users leaving, and offering a cheaper option at the moment of cancellation could help reduce those losses.
