Google has announced Wear OS 7, the next big update for its smartwatch platform. The new OS brings a bunch of improvements and new features to redefine the smartwatch experience. Samsung’s upcoming One UI 9 Watch skin should run on top of Wear OS 7, adding its own custom tweaks for Galaxy Watch users.

Here’s what’s new in Wear OS 7

Wear OS 7 appears to be a big upgrade over Wear OS 6. Google says it can bring up to a 10% improvement in battery life. While this may not sound huge, it could still make a noticeable difference for power users.

The company also introduced Wear Widgets, which it describes as the next step in the evolution of Tiles. You get flexible, dynamic widgets that appear in different sizes, including 2×1 and 2×2 formats. This makes it easier to quickly check key details on the watch.

Like Android, Google now brings Live Updates to Wear OS 7. This will let you see real-time information directly on your wrist, so you can get timely updates at a glance. For example, food delivery tracking, ride progress, and sports scores should now surface in real time.

Google makes Wear OS 7 smarter by integrating some Gemini Intelligence features. As a result, smartwatches offer more proactive, personalized support, allowing you to focus on what matters. Simply put, you can automate select tasks right from the smartwatch.

Wear OS 7 brings a standardized Workout Track system for third-party fitness apps. This allows developers to make their apps on a shared framework for heart rate monitoring, media control, and more. As a result, you should experience more consistent results across different apps.

Google also improves System Media Controls, so you get a seamless media experience. If you turn on “Auto-launch Settings” for an app, the watch automatically shows media controls when playback starts on the phone. Furthermore, Wear OS 7 brings a new Remote Output Switcher, making it easier to switch audio output devices directly from the watch.

It’s unclear when Google will make Wear OS 7 available for smartwatches. Based on past release patterns, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch 9 series, expected in July 2026, should be the first to ship with the new OS.
