Google Fixes Bug Affecting Large Google Photos ZIP Downloads

Are you unable to open a ZIP file of your recently downloaded Google Photos backup? Well, you may no longer encounter the problem with a fresh copy. Google has fixed a bug that caused large photo and video archives to break during download. The company has also shared a way to fix corrupted files that have already been downloaded.

It looks like Google Photos users had trouble downloading large backups of their photos and videos. The issue mainly happened when users downloaded files larger than 4 GB through the Google One Storage Manager on a computer. As such, the system failed to create a ZIP file correctly, and users could not open it.

Thankfully, Google has now fixed the issue. “Our engineering teams have identified the cause and have fixed this bug,” said the company’s community manager. “Any new downloads you initiate from Google Photos using the Google One Storage Manager on your computer will now work correctly, regardless of their size”.

To help users access their data, Google has shared two options. The first option is to download your photos and videos from Google Photos again. The system should now generate the new ZIP file correctly so you can open it without any errors. But what if you do not want to consume your data or re-download everything again?

Well, there is a solution for that. The company has provided a repair tool to fix corrupted ZIP files. You just need to head over to this link and select the ZIP file you cannot open. The tool will try to create a working copy for you. Note that it will be accessible to all users until June 1, 2027.

The good thing is that the issue did not affect the actual photos or videos stored in Google Photos. Otherwise, it would have created serious trouble among users.
