Google Messages Could Get Samsung Style Chat Customization

Google Messages appears to be working on new customization features to improve the chat experience. The company will reportedly bring a host of new personalization options comparable to those available in Samsung Messages. This development is currently hidden within the APK, so it may take a few months to roll out to users.

Recently, Samsung confirmed that it will discontinue Samsung Messages in July 2026. The company has also asked users to switch to Google Messages on its Galaxy phones. Of course, this move will bring better support for Rich Communication Services (RCS), but it will also mean losing some of the most loved customization tools.

With Samsung Messages, you can personalize your conversation in different ways. For example, pick an image from your gallery to decorate chat rooms. Thanks to Good Lock’s Theme Park module, you can explore even more customization options. These include changing bubble colors, improving contrast, and using wallpaper-based themes.

Thankfully, Google appears to be bringing some of these features to its messaging app. Recent findings (by Android Authority) in a beta version of the app suggest that the company could introduce a custom theme section. This could let you adjust background styles and chat bubble colors separately rather than depending on preset themes. Currently, Google Messages only lets you change these elements in tandem, which limits customization choices.

Furthermore, one key addition could be the ability to upload your own photos as a chat background. Finally, we could also get a preview feature to see the selected theme before applying it. Basically, Google appears to be addressing user frustration over the lack of customization tools in its messaging app. While the timeline for the rollout of new tools remains unclear, their presence in the APK suggests they could arrive in the coming months.
