Google Will Soon Allow Gmail Users to Change Their Email Address

Google is beginning to roll out a long-requested feature that allows users to change their primary Gmail address without creating a new Google account. Until now, anyone who wanted a different @gmail.com address had no real alternative. That is about to change, and users will no longer need to open a separate account or manually move their data.

The new feature lets eligible users replace their existing Gmail username with a new one while keeping all account data intact. This includes emails, Drive files, Photos, purchases, subscriptions, and account history. For many users, it eliminates one of the biggest pain points of managing a long-standing Google account.

You can change your Gmail address, and it won’t delete your existing one

According to updated Google support documentation, the old Gmail address is not deleted (via 9to5Google). Instead, it becomes an alias linked to the account. Emails sent to the old address will still arrive in the same inbox, and users can continue signing in to Google services using either address. Put simply, you can finally change that old, embarrassing @gmail.com address without breaking anything.

Google says the feature is rolling out gradually and is not yet available to all users. Early documentation first appeared in Hindi, suggesting testing began in India before expanding more widely. Users can check availability by going to Google Account settings, selecting Personal Info, and looking for an option to change their @gmail.com address.

There are limits, as expected. The change is only available for accounts ending in @gmail.com, and the new address must also be a @gmail.com address. Users can create a new address only once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes per account. If the option appears for you, you can try your luck and start the new year with a new username.
